Caterpillar describes the R1700 as "a perfect 3-pass match with the Cat AD45 underground truck". Their words, not ours.

The R1700 is a true 15 tonne loader. The AD45 carries 45,000 kg. Three buckets fills the tray exactly, with no part pass and nothing tipped over the side. It is the most common Cat load and haul combination in mid-size hard rock mines anywhere in the world, and the two machines were specified against each other from the start.

Both models are 1:50, so they stand together at the right relative size.

Why these two and not any other two

Pass matching is the whole game in load and haul. Three passes is the number mine planners want: fewer and the loader is oversized and spilling ore, more and the truck sits at the bay burning cycle time. Fifteen tonnes times three is forty five tonnes, which is the AD45 to the kilogram. That is not a coincidence, it is how Caterpillar sized the pair.
