Caterpillar built the R2900 XE to fill its largest underground trucks in three to four passes. The loader lifts 18.5 tonnes a bucket. The AD60 carries 60 tonnes. That is 3.2 buckets to a full truck, which lands exactly in the window CAT designed the machine for, and it is why this class of LHD works to this class of truck in hard rock mines worldwide.

Both models are 1:50, so the size gap between them on your shelf is the real size gap underground.

Why these two and not any other two

Caterpillar's launch release for the R2900 XE states that the loader "offers a 3- to 4-pass match to the Cat AD63 truck". The AD60 is the 60 tonne machine in that same class. Three buckets and a bit, truck away, next truck in.

Pass matching is the whole game in load and haul. Put too small a loader on a big truck and you burn cycle time filling it. Put too big a loader on a small truck and you spill ore over the tray or send it out light. Mines specify the pair together, which is why a set like this reads as correct to anyone who has worked underground, and a mismatched pair does not.
